About the Game of Tennis

The origins of any game of racket and ball including tennis are traditionally credited to 11th or 12th century French game paume which was played with the hand and later advanced into jeu be paume with the use of rackets. However, not all historians agree on this, there is a theory that the word tennis comes from the name of Tinnis, a town in ancient Egypt, and the word racket from rahat, meaning palm of the hand in Arabic. It is believed that different versions of the game were played in ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece, although there is no additional evidence to that.

By the 14th century the game became so popular, both the Pope and Louis IV tried to ban it unsuccessfully. Tennis soon spread to England, where it obtained the “royal game” title. Both Henry VII and Henry VIII were keen players who ensured the building of more courts. One of them, Hampton Court, built in 1625, is still used today.

The scoring history has two theories as well. The first one states that the scoring has its origins in ancient numerology. In medieval times, the number 60 was considered complete in a similar way as the number 100 is considered to be a “complete” figure today. The medieval adaptation of tennis thus considered 60 to be the “game” with four steps of points like 15, 30, 45 (or 40 as it is today) and finally 60. The second theory is attributed to the presence of a clock at the end of the tennis court. A quarter move of the clock hand was made after each break with the score being referred to as 15, 30, 45 and finally 60.

Walter Clopton Wingfield is usually given credit for the invention of modern tennis. He actually patented the game in 1874, pronounced a new set of rules and moved tennis from indoors to outdoors. The same year first tennis courts appeared in the United States, and shortly after that in Russia, India, Canada and China. According to http://us-opentickets.com/, 39 major tennis tournaments were held in the past year worldwide with over 78 000 tournament tickets sold.

Tennis is a test of skill, accuracy and agility. There is a huge amount of prize money to be won and a name to be earned for oneself. The game is popular with billions of people around the world. If you want to be fit and agile, grab the racquet and head out for an invigorating game of tennis!

Service Tennis’s Starting Stroke

In tennis, service symbols the beginning of a fresh round, a fresh game, a fresh set or a fresh match; in tennis until Dwight Davis and Holcombe Ward transformed the game by allocating the serve a brand new look by making it crucial to win points. A new and transformed service that this duo invented in now also called American Twist Delivery.

While this service became popular between the top tennis players throughout the globe, another player from US, Maurice E. MLoughlin also known as California Comet made a service like a thunderbolt sending it like fire balls that made his opponents gaping and stunned. This new style of service raised many questions among the top players of the yester years talking about the strictness of foot fault rules to control this giant that had left all the great old ground strokes outdated overnight! The new thrust that MLoughlin gave to Service continued to rule the tennis circuit till the time R.N. Williams had came through to counter attack the latest weapon cannon ball service. Williams answer for this serve was simple to follow the ball and hit it on the rising bounce.

Though, you need to deliver a service with a good amount of speed, it should not be considered as start and end of a good and effective service. To make a service more effective such that it is considered as a winner, along with speed it should have accuracy, reliability, and variety. Your service should never have a set style, but it should always vary so as to surprise your rival at every available instance.

Studies have established that a taller player always has a benefit in serving compared to his shorter rivals. A flawlessly flat service by a person who has a height of 6 ft with an added reach of 3 ft reach (and not disturbed by twist or wind), is found to just about clear the net at the center at its shortest height of 3 ft with the likelihood of the ball dropping only inside the 8-inch court area with the remaining at a level just below the angle of the net. The significant of adding a bit of twist to catch the ball and let it come into the tennis court is greatly visible over here. Landing the ball in the court alone is not sufficient, the speed of the ball with which it lands not leaving any room for your rival to let him go for a simple return. At the time of serving, thinking about that shot only is not fair enough; instead you should keep an eye on the next probable move, if the recipient is going to play the ball in the court. Hence, always place the ball in a good manner when serving such that the receiver should not have a good chance of returning the ball back in an area from where you cannot return the ball to him.

Just as receivers main concern is to play a good stroke and return the ball, a core plan behind your service need to be that not allow the receiver to return the shot properly. Instead of trying and making a lot of sweat for a clean sweep, you should concentrate on confusing your rival regarding his ground strokes. This confusion is likely to get you better reward as compared with thinking about clean sweep.

Always remember to serve from the highest possible point without tiring and overstretching yourself. The sign of a very good service is varied pace, accuracy and speed.

When you deliver a Slice Service, the service should start from the highest possible point from over your shoulder (obviously for right-handers its the right shoulder) by standing tall on your both feet with an angle of 45 degrees to the courts baseline. Swing the tennis racquet from your backside easily and freely transferring your body weight first on your (right) back foot. Throw the ball in the air and send it slightly above the desired straight hitting zone, and as your swing starts, with perfect timing to hit the ball when it comes down to your desired straight hitting zone, accelerate your swing at the same time giving your maximum power to your service by transferring your body weight on the (left) front foot just at the time of impact of ball with the racquet to smash the ball at your opponent. To get some twist or turn ball to the court, struck the ball at the stringed area along the inner side, as the tennis racquet moves in the direction of the court. Always keep in mind to have a somewhat flexible wrist (different from the rigid wrist position) at the time of service. To get the maximum pace and power towards the ball, you need to raise your back foot (that means right leg for right-handers people) well above the ground while bending forward and shifting your entire body weight on the (left) front foot with complete swing at the time of impact. The direction of the racquets swing should be from right to left (of course for right-handers) at the same time giving it an additional twist in the right path by your (left) front leg turned at the time of hitting the ball. For left-handers you only need to change the directions and foot arrangements as discussed above.

An extremely significant thing related to service is to take highest care for over foot-faulting. Crossing the line or foot touching, either of these, before delivering the ball is considered as a foot fault. You will not give away foot fault if you take proper care to place your both feet properly within the line while you are preparing to serve to your rival.

A deliberate foot faulting is equally bad as ball miscalling; but many a times its not caused because of carelessness, over anxiety, ignorance of rules, can also result in foot faulting. All this can be overcome easily with a bit of exposure and time.

Steps To Treating Tennis Elbow At Home

Treating Tennis Elbow at Home

Tennis elbow as such, does not always require direct surgical or drug intervention, not all cases of tennis elbow, warrant extensive physiotherapy, surgery or pain killers. If detected early, tennis elbow can be treated at home. Before you attempt any of the exercises and techniques mentioned below, please note that you should get the tennis elbow condition properly diagnosed, and should discuss the steps mentioned below with your doctor.

Make sure your hand and arm is properly rested, if during any activity you experience more pain than normal, stop the activity immediately and then rest your arm. Depending on the severity and duration of the pain, you might have to give up the activity for weeks or months on end. While the activity might be a part of your daily routine or might be something you do as a part of your job, be prepared for a life style change in that case.

Using an ice pack, or a just a anything at cool temperature (could be a bag of peas, a pack of salami). The minimum recommended duration for using an ice pack is around 10 minutes, and icing is recommended at least 3 times a day, if the pain is severe then you can increase both the duration and the frequency of the icing. Usually your physiotherapist or surgeon will recommend this activity, and if so follow the instructions to the letter.

A counterforce brace or elbow brace is a specialized orthopaedic brace, that is designed to provide additional support to your elbow, and to keep it warmer thereby increasing the blood circulation to the elbow. You might have noticed a lot of sports men wear this brace as it not only re-directs the strain that is experienced by the muscles but also makes sure that the elbow muscles and tendons have better support.

If you experience inflammation and soreness in your elbow, then elevating the elbow at an angle will usually help draw the blood supply away from the elbow, and thus reduce the pain you feel. It also greatly reduces the swelling and numbness that is associated with tennis elbow.

Get started as soon as possible with an exercise strengthening program that specifically targets the muscles and tendons surrounding the elbow joint. As with any injury, rehab is vital for a complete recovery. Specific tennis elbow exercises will get you back on track in no time. If you are looking to cure your tennis elbow for good, check out this fantastic tennis elbow system.

John Mcenroe Tennis Academy Names Kleger Director Of Tennis, Expands To Westchester, Long Island

The John McEnroe Tennis Academy today named New York native Lawrence Kleger as its new Director of Tennis. Kleger, a 25 year coaching veteran, has been the Executive Director of Tennis at Sportime Clubs since 1998, and an Assistant Academy Director at JMTA since September 2011. He was hand-picked by McEnroe for the position.

Additionally, JMTA is also announcing its expansion to Long Island and Westchester, with new annexes of the Academy to be housed at Sportime Bethpage in central Long Island, a six court indoor facility that has long been Sportime’s high performance training home, and at Sportime Lake Isle, a brand new eight court facility in the Town of Eastchester in southern Westchester.

The Bethpage and Lake Isle annexes will make training opportunities for Long Island, Westchester and Connecticut residents easier and closer to home, while, at the same time, giving those students pathways to training at the original Academy at Sportime Randalls Island. These moves are the latest in a series that are designed to expand the McEnroe Academys impact on the growth of tennis and the lives of young athletes in the New York area.

There are few if any people who understand my philosophy and are as well respected in coaching as Lawrence Kleger, said McEnroe. Lawrences track record in developing well-rounded young tennis players speaks for itself, and we are very excited to have him in this position as we expand our reach to help those interested in playing competitive tennis in the tri-state area.

I am a big believer in Johns philosophy, which is multi-faceted, but starts with a non-residential academy setting, offering a world-class coaching staff and training methods. I know that we are going to produce some great young tennis players, and I am excited to take this new position, Kleger said. The Academy is off to a great start in its first two years and I am looking forward to helping grow it even further in my new role.

Kleger has coached more ranked junior tennis players than any other tennis coach in the history of the USTA Eastern Section, and is most proud that his students have won 18 USTA Eastern Year-End Sportsmanship Awards. In addition to running high level programs at JMTA, and at Sportime Clubs in Syosset and Bethpage on Long Island, he is also the personal coach of Noah Rubin, who now trains at JMTA and who has been Lawrences student since the age of 7. Rubin is a top American prospect and achieved a career-best #18 ITF junior world ranking for boys 18 and under this January (despite having just turned 16 in February) and is top ranked in U.S. 16 and under standings.

Founded in 2010 at Sportime Randalls Island, the John McEnroe Tennis Academy provides tennis training to many of NYs best and highest ranked junior players. Full and partial scholarships are available for qualified and promising young players who could not otherwise afford JMTA participation. JMTA corporate partners Nike and Dunlop provide JMTA students with equipment and apparel for their use, both at the Academy and in tournament play. Lawrence Kleger supervises a team of over 30 instructors, including former ATP and WTA professional players Fritz Buehning, Hana Sromova and Martina Sucha, and Assistant Academy Directors Karim Balagh, Bruce Haddad, Harel Srugo and Juan Rios. John McEnroe is routinely involved in the daily program at Randalls Island, personally supervising and training staff and coaching and inspiring young players. The Academys first two years of operation at Randalls Island exceeded expectations, with over 600 aspiring future champions enrolled.
